Progress on weatherizing Lhawang Gatsal, the community shrine room, has been eagerly monitored by sangha members who have spent many hot hours there during the summer programs. Phase 1 — installation of windows on the north side of the building — was completed in the early summer of 2009. Phase 2, which called for insulation to be installed under the roof, was completed in early November.
Lhawang Gatsal has a 12 ft.overhang on its north (window) side and three more overhangs are planned for the other sides of the building this Spring. These overhangs will shade the metal walls to help to keep the shrine room cooler. The overhangs will also cover a new circumambulation path around the outside of the entire shrine room.
In anticipation of the Nyingthig Yabzhi, to be held in 2010, a large outside area on the window side of Lhawang Gatsal has been built up and leveled to provide space for overflow seating.
