In August, amidst great fanfare, Lotus Garden received a special gift from Mindrolling Monastery in India — a beautiful new 15 ft. tall statue of Buddha Shakyamuni. One of three made from the same mold, the other statues are installed at Mindrolling Monastery on the Great Stupa and in Kalimpong. It was the wish of His Holiness Mindrolling Trichen that this third Buddha be brought to Lotus Garden to celebrate the establishment of the Mindrolling lineage in the West. Two monks from Mindrolling traveled to Lotus Garden in June to help select the best location and supervise the preparation of the Tibetan-style pedestal, which was constructed to exact specifications by local builders. The statue will be placed in its beautiful lake setting in the spring of 2009 with a pagoda to cover it. A circumambulation path has also been created around the lake and platforms for prostrators are planned.
This past summer, in an attempt to ease the Lotus Garden housing shortage during larger programs, a new dorm for men was erected at Lotus Garden. The building will also serve as accommodations for teachers during the smaller year round programs. A new women's dorm is planned for the future.
