The Buddha discovered that cessation of suffering dawns when all inner and outer experience are known to be like magical illusions, vivid yet empty of inherent existence. The Buddhist teachings provide a unique progressive path of study, contemplation and meditation that leads the student to the liberating wisdom of this fundamental insight which is inseparable from unconditional compassion for all beings.
In this Winter Shedra, participants will examine the profound wisdom teachings of emptiness, known as Madhyamaka. The program will be based on His Eminence Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche's 2011 and 2012 Shedra teachings on Chandrakirti's Introduction to the Middle Way. We will also study Shantideva's classic text Bodhisattvacaryavatara (The Way of the Bodhisattva) as expounded by H.E. Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche during the 2006 to 2009 Lotus Garden Shedra Retreats, and learn practical ways to see the illusion of self-grasping and become more available for all sentient beings. His Holiness the Dalai Lama has commented: “If I have any understanding of compassion … it is only on the basis of this text that I possess it."
This retreat will be useful for both students new to the wisdom teachings as well as students who have studied Madhyamaka and the Bodhisattvacaryavatara in the past. There will be an opportunity for study, contemplation and meditation.
